Ice Rink Opens in Wicker Park!

There is a new ice rink that people can be eager to go to when the temperature hits 32 degrees or lower and you don’t have to drag yourself downtown for it! Wicker Ice officially opened yesterday with the help of tons of volunteers. They have had amazing support and funding from the community and after some delays due to unnaturally warm weather for Chicago, the rink is finally open.

Residents are hoping to see hockey players Kane and Toews someday grace their ice, but until then, the community can stay cool on the ice.

More information about the rink can be found here on their Facebook page. The rink is open most days until sunset, permitting the temp is at or below 34 degrees.

Try This Piemontese Restaurant

The restaurant opened in May of 2014 and is owned by Aldo Zaninotto and Cameron Grant who know what they are talking about when it comes to Piemontese cuisine. Zaninotto expresses his happiness due to the fact that about 70% of his customers are those who live in the neighborhood and return.

Land Near 606 Trail Up For $2.3 Million

It’s a given that since the 606 Trail opened during the summer of 2015, the value of homes and nearby properties have significantly gone up. Which explains why the former plot that used to be Rockstar Pets is going up for sale this week at 2.3 million.

The land is located at 1801 North Winnebago Avenue, close to the eastern end of the Bloomingdale Trail. The owners of the former pet boarding and daycare center Elissa Ferguson and her partner Alex Rodriquez, explained that due to the hike in their rent (jumping an extra $1,000 per month) unfortunately gave them no other choice but to move.

The land has been owned by Jim Viola since 1987 and thinks it will be a prime spot for townhomes or single-family homes. Although Viola hopes to sell the land to a developer, if he is unable to find a buyer he will rent it out, likely to another pet daycare.

2211 North Milwaukee Apartments Have Secured Funding

Funding for a 120 unit apartment building has finally been secured by a New York developer to be built at 2211 North Milwaukee in Logan Square. Principal Real Estate based out of Iowa is providing the funding for this massive building that is estimated to completed sometime during the middle of 2016. What was once considered an area with one of the least amount of space is quickly becoming one of the hottest neighborhoods in Chicago. This new development has been downsized since March, when developer Property Markets Group went back to the drawing board and not only lowered the height of the building, but the number of units and parking spots that will be available as well. They went from proposing 136 units and 136 spaces to 120 units and only 67 spaces. The ground level retail has gone down as well from 15,712 sure feet to only 5, 246. Even with this dramatic downsizing, this new development will be great for the market. The next two years are going to be very exciting and innovative.

First Ascent One Step Closer to Completion

The Summer is almost upon us! Well, that might be difficult to tell you know, because most of us are still wearing our Winter coats in the middle of April, but when that day does indeed come, there will be a new site in town to stay in shape, have fun, and get our workouts in. First Ascent is an indoor climbing and fitness gym that is expected to open sometime in the middle of this year at 3500 North Spaulding.

On top of having equipment for cardio, climbing, and yoga, they intend to have a cafe that serves light drinks and coffee as well. Climbing for fun and as a means of exercising has taken Chicagoans by storm, as many people tend to seek out this new found hobby. There will actually be two new climbing facilities, says Dan Bartz, operational director of the project who also adds that, “The two facilities will be very different, so each will have its own scene. The Logan Square facility will have some of the tallest indoor climbing in the country, so boulderers in Uptown will visit to rope up and work on their endurance—or boulder on some fresh terrain up on the mezzanine.”

Bloomingdale Trail (The 606) To Unveil in June 2015

There are so many exciting and wonderful projects taking root in Chicago, particularly in Logan Square. And when a project that requires as much funding ($95 million, to be exact) as The 606 manages to bring together a community of more than 80,000 neighbors among the neighborhoods of Logan Square, Wicker Park, Humboldt Park, and Bucktown, I can’t see how this can’t be beneficial to the community as a whole.

To preface, the Bloomingdale Line began to diminish around the early 90s and so it was suggested by the City of Chicago to be used as a much needed green space for the Logan Square area. When residents thought that it should be a three mile trail (undisturbed by streets) that runs through each of these neighborhoods, the decade of planning, funding, and contracting sort of just–flew by.

In less than two months time, the trail will be open. On the official 606 site it says, “The 606 brings together arts, history, design, trails for bikers, runners, and walkers, event spaces, alternative transportation avenues, and green, open space for neighbors, Chicagoans, and the world.”
