Where to Find Paczkis for Paczkis Day!

Fat Tuesday in Chicago translates into eating a whole lotta paczkis, a polish pastry much like our American counterparts Boston Creme, Bavarian Creme, and the classic Jelly Donut. Tomorrow, February 9th is Paczkis Day which is much like Fat Tuesday, a Christian tradition where you can basically indulge in the fine and decadent things in life before Lent and fasting begins.

Aesop Coming to Bucktown

A popular Australian skincare brand known as Aesop will be opening near a busy and already bolstering little Bucktown intersection at 1653 N. Damen, the first one of these stores to open in the Midwest.

According to a member of the Heartland Construction Group Dean Sluiter, if everything continues as planned, the shop will be completed by April.

“We’re doing a complete rehab with natural elements in the interior and Chicago brick incorporated into the design. It will be really unique,” he also explained.

New Plans for Lathrop Homes

The Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) is going to soon show their master plan for renewing the historic Lathrop Homes housing complex after years of delay. If you’re heading east, the complex trickles in after the bridge on Diversey and Logan right before the Damen and Clybourn intersection.

Only a small portion of the over 900 units still remain occupied while the others have been abandoned and or boarded up. The most recent proposal is to rehab half of the housing complex and completely tear down the other.

“The planned development proposal that the CHA and Lathrop Community Partners submitted also includes plans for a dog run, a boat and kayak launch, a riverfront park, multiple play areas and a “great lawn” in the center of the redevelopment.” Explains Paul Biasco.

New Dill Pickle Coming to Logan Square

Dill Pickle Food Co-Op in Logan Square across from the Logan Square Library at 3039 W. Fullerton is looking to expand by opening up another DP at 2746 N. Milwaukee. If this is the first you’re hearing of Dill Pickle and you are under the assumption that this will be some freaky pickle fanatic’s bar, here is their mission statement to enlighten you.

“Dill Pickle Food Co-op offers healthy food choices and the benefits of cooperative practice to build a vibrant local community and more sustainable world. We meet community needs and strengthen area diversity through products, services, and education.”

Ice Rink Opens in Wicker Park!

There is a new ice rink that people can be eager to go to when the temperature hits 32 degrees or lower and you don’t have to drag yourself downtown for it! Wicker Ice officially opened yesterday with the help of tons of volunteers. They have had amazing support and funding from the community and after some delays due to unnaturally warm weather for Chicago, the rink is finally open.

Residents are hoping to see hockey players Kane and Toews someday grace their ice, but until then, the community can stay cool on the ice.

More information about the rink can be found here on their Facebook page. The rink is open most days until sunset, permitting the temp is at or below 34 degrees.

Chef Couple To Open Restaurant in West Loop

The West Loop can expect a new high fare restaurant in its corridor soon at 177 North Ada Street. It will be run by chef power couple John B. Shields and Karen Urie Shields, both of whom were raised in Chicago. John previously worked at Charlie Trotter’s and Alinea and Karen worked at Charlie Trotter’s (where she met her now husband, John) as well as Tru.

The restaurant will be called Smyth + The Loyalist with a 40-seat dining room and will have a downstairs lounge. They will offer “an original, eight-course tasting menu for $135 and a 16-course tasting menu for $220. The chef couple will rely on an “exclusive custom collaboration” with a 20-acre Illinois farm for much of the restaurant’s produce, herbs and flowers,” explains Stephanie Lulay in this DNAinfo article.

The couple is returning to Chicago after five years spent in Southwestern Virginia where they ran Town House and Riverstead Inn. Accompanying them will be their two daughters.
