Tour de Fat 2016

Tour de Fat 2016 will take place in Palmer Square on July 9th, bringing the silly bike-wielding people you love to see. And of course, there will be beer. Lots and lots of white Belgium beer.

For those who are unfamiliar with Tour de Fat, New Belgium which is a Colorado-based brewery, host events in order to promote biking as a sustainable means of transportation. You also have the opportunity to handover your car keys and pledge to not drive for a year and win some money while you’re at it.

Fate of Bonny’s Old Dive Bar

Bonny’s, the beloved dive bar that closed in 2012 due to owner and landlord dispute is going to be reincarnated as another bar. The now vacant space at 2714 N. Milwaukee and its 2nd floor have been purchased by Jared Savocchi, a man who used to work in finance but is now following his dream to open a tavern.

Fans of Bonny’s shouldn’t expect to find a resurrection of its former self but one that will mimic the casual and chill atmosphere it used to have. Savocchi explains in this DNAinfo article by Paul Biasco how he doesn’t want to create a cocktail bar or the kind of place that’s hot one minute but not the next. Sounds like the new owner just might do the old bar proud.

16 Years Later- Lula Cafe Still Wows

Lula Cafe in Logan Square has been open for 16 years, I know! For some reason it seems like that number is unheard of when concerning restaurants since new ones seem to be cropping up every week or so.

When you’re in popular neighborhood like Logan Square, you expect good food and according to Phil Vettel, this little place still has the same charms it stole people’s hearts with back when they first opened.

Pho-Q Pop-up Event at Analogue

Analogue will be hosting a one-day only pop-up event on April 4th at 6:30PM. Two chefs from the the restaurant–Alfredo Nogueira and Danny Kaplan– will be teaming up with Freddy Noinaj (who previously ran a food truck in Texas) to bring together American barbecue and Vietnamese food to see what they can come up with.

The event is called Pho-Q and will feature a four-course prix fixe dinner which will include smoked meats, smoked gulf shrimp egg rolls and more.

Tickets to the event are $40 and can be pre-purchased here.

Seafood-in-a-Bag Restaurant Coming to Logan Square

Hot cheese in a bag of chips, Taco in a bag in Lincoln Square, and now seafood in a bag in Logan Square. Who doesn’t want food in a bag all snugly packed for you so there is minimal mess?!

Previous partner at Angry Crab Theresa Tran along with her bay-area boyfriend Andrew Nguyen are opening up a seafood in a bag restaurant called the Crab Pad at 2529 North Milwaukee Avenue in early June, saying that they love the Logan Square crowd in this DNAinfo article by Paul Biasco.

What will really set this joint apart from the others in town will be their ice cream-on-a-stick-bar they plan to have a separate counter for that people can order while waiting to get/place their order.

Binny’s Might be Coming to Diversey and Pulaski

The beloved old Walgreens that once stood at the corner of Diversey and Pulaski has been closed since November and it seems like Binny’s, the vast liquor chain might be the ones to buy and remodel it according to this article by Paul Biasco. Neighboring Logan Square, members of the Hermosa Neighborhood Association met with Leonardo Giron to discuss the opening of the store last Thursday.

Although the usual concerns regarding the opening of a liquor store were present, the general reception to the store was positive seeing as the store is known for its high-end merchandise and good reputation and because the store will likely bring in many needed jobs to the area.
