We’ve all been hearing about the increase in taxes all over the city and have been hearing about all the new developments coming to Logan Square. With protests and marches going on in Humboldt Park regarding the imminent increase in rent and the issue of gentrification, we knew that it was only a matter of time before the same issues seeped into Logan Square.
Well, turns out that time is here. Mark Fishman owns about 80 properties in Logan Square. M. Fishman & Co. is probably a name you have seen around on buildings and if not heard about since he owns establishments like the Logan Theater, which he bought in 2012 and remodeled. He also happens to own the building located at 2700 N. Milwaukee and tenants there are already getting letters informing them of an increase in their rent which is due in part to the fact that Logan Square is such a hot-spot right now but also because the building needed many repairs that he fixed since he became the owner.
The rent is hiked up anywhere from $300 for studios to $600 for one-bedroom apartments which most of the tenants cannot afford. Today afternoon, tenants along with housing rights groups and some religious leaders will be marching at Palmer Square which has already begun.
