A man named Martin Kimbelle claimed 160 acres in Chicago in what is now known as Logan Square in 1836. The Kimbelle family not only built their home but most of the homes within their neighborhood and along Kimball and Bernard Avenue.

Many of the homes along this intersection still remain intact with the large porches with homes built of wood with colorful detail that were built between 1900 through 1910.

Logan Square preservationists are now pushing to have the blocks with those original homes that have gone unchanged, to be put on the National Register of Historic Places.

Zero Percent, a Chicago-based tech startup is on a mission to completely end food waste while providing healthy foods for not-for-profits throughout the city. They have partnered up with about 100 restaurants(including our favorite pizza spot, Lou Malnati’s) and charities for an event that is known as Restaurant Giving Week.

“For every $5 donated to a Chicago charity, which will cover food rescue transportation costs, donors will receive a voucher for a treat from one of 20 participating restaurants,” explains Paul Biasco in his story on the initiative on DNAinfo.

The week-long days of giving will go on from February 22nd until the 28th but those who would like to participate by donating can do so now.

Julia de Burgos Park, one of four ground-level parks spread out along the 606, was approved yesterday by the City Council for expansion. The lot north of the park at 1805 N. Albany was bought last year by the Department of Planning and Development for $260,000.

Before that space becomes part of the actual park, however, the City Council agreed to an Open Spaces Impact Fee grant in the amount of $235,000 that will aid in environmentally cleaning up the area. This will mean that the park will be expanded by .15 acres when completed.

A couple weeks ago it seemed that Alderman Joe Moreno was in agreement about demolishing and rezoning the area where Saint John United Church of Christ currently stands. Preservation groups were unhappy with both the developer and Ald. Moreno who last week, were close to signing off on the paperwork that would demolish the 105-year-old church to make room for more condominiums.

Although the pastor of Saint John United stated that there was a deal in place for the sale of the church last week, the alderman says this is untrue stating, “I would prefer that it be saved, even though it’s not historically landmarked. There also has to be an economic plan for that.”
